Have you ever wondered how your street got it's name?

Claremont Museum's newest exhibition, Streets of Claremont, uncovers the people, places and stories behind the Town's street names.

Some streets commemorate former mayors, councillors and Roads Board members who helped bring bore water, electric lighting and other infrastructure to Claremont. Others recognise people who helped build the Council building and Aquatic Centre, or funded two local schools.

Street names also reflect Claremont's geography, local businesses, notable residents and ships.

"We pass these street signs every day, but rarely stop to ask whose story they carry," Mayor Peter Telford said.

"This exhibition is a chance to see familiar places differently and recognise the people who helped shape Claremont. I encourage residents to come along, find their own street and discover the stories of the neighbourhood around them," he added.

Streets of Claremont opens on Thursday 29 October with a morning tea from 10am to 11am. Guests can enjoy refreshments and meet members of the Museum's curatorial team, who will share how they researched and developed the exhibition. Book tickets here.

As part of the exhibition and the popular History in a Coffee Cup series, historian Sue Hobson will present a special talk on the streets of Nedlands. She will explore the stories behind their names and the similarities between the two neighbouring suburbs. Book tickets here.
