The red poppy is an internationally recognised symbol of military service to remember those who died or suffered in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

By placing an image of a poppy on street signs - directly related to people and events from military history - we can ensure their stories and courage are not forgotten.

Poppies are already in place on street signs throughout New Zealand, in some parts of Canada, in Queensland and more locally in the City of Cockburn.

The late Kevin Bovill, a RSLWA Claremont sub-branch member, had the idea to bring this project to the Town of Claremont.

In the Town there are eight streets honouring military service: Avion Way, Brian Walker Lane, Judge Avenue, Kott Terrace, Needs Lane, Renown Avenue, Riley Road and St Quentin Avenue.

"Having poppies on street signs throughout the Town allows the community to learn the stories of the individuals and the military history of points around the Town," Mayor Peter Telford said.
