CHRISTMAS CARNIVAL

Claremont Christmas CarnivalThe Claremont Christmas Carnival is held annually, usually on the last Thursday night in November, and heralds the official commencement of the Christmas season in Claremont.

Lights are installed in the large pine tree in Claremont Park as well as in Bay View Terrace, St Quentin Avenue and Swanbourne Shopping Centre.

The streets are closed off and areas of the shopping district are transformed into a beautifully lit and vibrant piazza with food stalls, street theatre, musicians and a variety of entertainment.

The highlight of the evening is the arrival of Santa Claus and his helpers amidst the excited cries of local children as they shriek and swoop onto sweets thrown into the crowd by Santa and his band of helpers.

CAROLS IN CLAREMONT PARK

The Claremont-Nedlands Lions Club presents the annual “Carols in Claremont Park” in close cooperation with the Town of Claremont.  This event sees families picnicking in the beautiful surrounds of Claremont Park as they share in the traditional Christmas story and carols with the support of the combined churches choir and the Claremont Concert Band.  Each year the crowds increase significantly as the event continues to enjoy popularity and be a focal point for the community of Claremont in the lead up to the celebration of Christmas.

This event is generally held in early December.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

War MemorialThe Town of Claremont enjoys a particularly strong relationship with the Claremont RSL, and together with the RSL members, continues to annually recognize the significant contribution that has been made to the lifestyle we enjoy as citizens of a free democracy.

Each year on 11 November at 11.00 am a small, dedicated group of ex-servicemen and their families attend a ceremony which is held in the town centre to remember those who fell in World War I.  A bugler plays the last post and reveille and the Mayor, Councillors and local residents stop for a minute’s silence to honour the fallen.

ANZAC DAY

April 25th each year sees a significant crowd gather at the War Memorial as part of the Town’s contribution to Anzac Day.  The members of the Claremont RSL, together with Council’s Community Services staff, plan the event so that all those in attendance recognise the contribution made to the pursuit of freedom by not only those former residents of Claremont and surrounds but those who came from the broader community.

The ceremony is very moving and it is comforting for those senior members of the community to see that many young people, including members of the Claremont Youth Advisory Council, are part of the service.  Many participants come forward with their contributions of flowers and wreaths as they acknowledge the supreme sacrifice made by our servicemen and women.

Following the ceremony, those in attendance have the opportunity to catch up with old friends and exchange reminiscences with their fellow servicemen and women.

The Town of Claremont is proud to contribute to these ceremonies so that present and future generations will understand this part of our Anzac tradition.
